Soviet naval force sighted between Vladivostok and Hokkaido according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 7 January 1956

An item reported the presence on 21 September of a Soviet naval force consisting of 13 surface units and one submarine about midway between Vladivostok and Hokkaido apparently executing gunnery exercises. The submarine seemed to be a W-class, among the surface units were 1 Kirov-class heavy cruiser, 1 Gordy-class Destroyers and 5 destroyer escorts of the Kola or Riga-clas. On 22 September was the force fairly close to the Soviet coastline geographical position 45.08 North-138.34 East.
