Japan ordered new submarine chasers according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 7 January 1956

An item ferred to the Japanese reporting that the Japanese Defence announced that the firms Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Dockyard Company and Mitsui Shipbuilding Company were to built 4 additional A-class anti submarine vessels. Two vessels of the A-class were already built in Japan. Displacement 1,600 tons, speed 30.5 knots and 4-12.7cm/5” guns as main armament.(1)
