Designed as Fury by Director of Naval Construction 1874-1906 Sir Edward James Reed (20 September 1830 Sheerness-30 November 1906 London), building stopped in 1871 and designed changed by new DNC Nathaniel Barnaby assisted by William White.

Preceded by Devastation-class. Laid down on way number No. 2 of Pembroke Dockyard under 1870 Naval Programme on 10 September 1870, launched on 8 March 1875, completed on 15 Feburary 1879, commissioned in 1884, reclassified as 2nd class battleship in 1900 and sold to be broken up on 14 July 1908 which was executed by February 1909.
