An item referred to dispatches from Tokyo, Japan reporting that the former American river gunboat USS Luzon was commissioned as Karatsu in the Japanese navy. The Japanese claimed finding her beached at Corregidor.(1)

Laid down by Kiangnan Dock and Engineering Works, Shanghai, China as Yangtze River gunboat on 26 November 9126, launched on 12 September 1927, commissioned on 1 June 1928, scuttled in Manila Bay, Philippines on 6 May 1942, stricken on 8 May 1942, salvaged by the Japanese end May 1942, repaired at Cavite, Philippines, renamed Karatsu on 1 August 1942, later converted into a seagoing submarine chaser completed on 14 October 1942, scuttled als block ship in the Manila Bay on 5 February 1945 and stricken on 10 April 1945. Original technical characteristics: 508 tons displacement and as dimensions 64.24 x 9.4 x 1.8 mtres or 210.9 x 31 x 6 feet, a speed of 16 knots, crew numbered 80 men and armed with 2-76mm/3” anti aircraft guns and 10-7.62mm/0.30”machine guns.
