Designed by the Director of Naval Construction 1863-1870) Sir Edward James Reed (20 September 1830 Sheerness-30 November 1906 London) as the Independencia for Brazil. Was in fact a version of HMS Devastation fitted out with masts which was on her turn a sea-going versions of the Cerberus-class breastwork monitors but in practice she looked like an enlarged version of HMS Monarch.

Laid down by J.&W. Dudgeon, Cubitt Town, London, England in 1873, launched on 10 September 1874, acquired by England between February-March 1878, completed on 3 September 1881, sold to be broken up on 15 September 1903 which was done in Germany the following year.
