British torpedo boat carrier-depot ship HMS Hecla 1878-1926

Purchased out of the Vote of credit in 1878, commissioned on 3 September 1878, modernised in 1912 and sold in 1926. Built as an iron merchant ship by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Belfast, Norther, Ireland single screw, 1,760 ihp horsepower, speed on the measured mile 12 knots, unsheathed, protected by coal armour and armed with 64 pd muzzle loading guns. Crew numbered 226 men. Costs hull and engine 126,000 pond sterling. Displacement 6,400 tons and as dimensions 392.0 x 38.10 x 21.9 9draught forward)-24.3 (aft) feet.

Able to carry 8 fast torpedo boats with her. The boats were built by Messrs. Thornycroft of Chiswick and other companies in 2 classe, with a speed of 22 knots amd costs hull and engines 5,800 pond sterling and the secon class 16-17 knots speed ansd costs half of the 1st class.
