An item reported the loss of two Japanese cruisers during the invasion of Christmas Island (Summaries Nos. 114-115). An American submarine torpedoed a Jintsu-class cruiser [Sendai-class preceded by Nagara-class succeeded by Agano-class, the Naka was 1 April heavily damaged by one torpedo of the USS Seawolf SS-197 and towed to the Bantam Bay, Java, Dutch East Indies by the Natori on 31 March. Around twenty hours later the sub returned and torpedoed and sunk a Natori-class cruiser [preceded by Kuma-class succeeded by Yubari and Sendai-class none sunk in that period]. On 1 April about 13 hours after the second attack when returning the sub again attacked the still floating Jintsu-class cruiser again torpeding and hitting and probably sinking her. The J.I.C. commented that this was a sound display of submarine tactics.
