The Niels-Juel class was preceded by the Peder Skram-class frigates and Triton-class corvettes and the mid 1970s design of the KV72-class corvettes and succeeded by the Iver Hvitfeldt-class frigates. There were three corvettes built by the Danish Aalborg Shipyard, all three broken up in 2013.

Niels Juel F354, laid down on 20 October 1977, launched on 17 February 1978, commissioned on 26 August 1970 and decommissioned on 18 August 2009.

Olfert Fischer F355, laid down on 6 December 1978, launched on 12 January 1980, commissioned on 16 October 1981 and decommissioned on 18 August 2009.

Peter Tordenskiold F356, Laid down on 3 December 1979, launched on 30 April 1980, commissioned on 2 April 1982 and decommissioned on 18 August 2009.

Displacement 1,450 tonnes and as dimensions 84 x 10.3 x 4.8 metres or 276 x 34 x 16 feet. Propulsion consisted of 1-19,200kW General Electic gas turbine and 1-3,600kW MTU 20V-956 diesel motor allowing aspeed of 30 knots using the gas turbine, a range of 4,000 nautical miles/18 knots and 1,020 nautical miles/28 knots and an endurance of 25 days. Crew numbered 93 (standard)-110 (operations) men. Armament consisted of Harpoon SSM, Sea Sparrow SAM MK-48 mod. 3 VLS, Stinger SAM, Otto Melare 7.6cm gun, heavy machine guns and depth charges.
