French warships executing gun exercisies at Dakar, Senegal according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee Daily summary dated 17 May 1942

An item reported that the French light cruisers George Leygues (1) and Montcalm(2) and the heavy destroyers Fantasque (3) and Malin (4) executed gun exercises on 12 May of Dakar.

Notes

1. Laid down by At.&Ch. De St. Nazaire-Penhoet on 21 September 1933, launched on 24 March 1936, commissioned on 15 November 1937, decommissioned on 1 May 1957 and sold to be broken up in November 1959. Part of the La Galissonnière-class light cruiser preceded by Émile Bertin succeeded by planned De Grasse-class.

2. Laid down by Société Nouvelle des Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée, La Seyne-sur-Mer, France on 15 November 1933, launched on 26 October 1935, commissioned on 15 November 1937, decommmissioned on 1 May 1957, accommodation hulk since 1959, renamed Q457 on 31 December 1969 and broken up in 1970. Part of the La Galissonnière-class light cruiser preceded by Émile Bertin succeeded by planned De Grasse-class.

3. Le Fantasque-class destroyer preceded by Vauquelin-class succeeded by Mogador-class, ordered under the naval programme of 1930, laid down by Arsenal de Lorient, France on 16 November 1931, launched on 15 March 1934, completed on 10 March 1936, reclassified as light cruiser on 28 September 1943, stricken in 1953 and broken up in 1958.

4. Le Fantasque-class destroyer preceded by Vauquelin-class succeeded by Mogador-class, ordered under the naval programme of 1930, laid down by Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée, La Seyne, France on 16 November 1931, launched on 17 August 1933, completed on 1 May 1936, reclassified as light cruiser on 28 September 1943, stricken on 3 February 1964 and broken up in 1977.
