None Japanese aircraft carriers and cruisers sighted in the Solomons area ccording to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee Daily summary dated 14 May 1942

An item reported that aircraft sighted in the Solomons area on 11 May just light naval craft and merchant ships but none aircraft carriers and cruisers. It was possible that the heavy cruisers went to the east and that Rabaul was defended by shore-based aircraft strengthened by aircraft in the Marshalls after the heavy losses in last week.(1)

Note

1. Battle of the Coral Sea between USA and Australia against Japan between 4-8 May 1942, the Japanese light carrier Shoho was destroyed and the fleet carrier Shokaku damaged. The fleet carrier Zuikaku was forced to return to Japan for replacing the large loss of aircraft and aircrew.
