In his letter No. 1263 dated Lisbon 17 September 1941 reported the German naval attaché in Portugal to the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine at Berlin that from Funchal was reported that a heavily armed British auxiliary cruiser of around 7,000 tons flying the war flag arrived at Funchal, Madeira for water and victuals. An Italian source reported her departure in the night of 14 September.
