A letter of the German naval attache in Japan dated Tokyo, Japan 11 June 1938 reported the expected launching at the Uraga shipyard on 28 June 1938 of the destroyer Shiranuhi of which the name was yet not mentioned in Weyer [Weyers flottentaschbuch?]. It was unknown if there were ships of her type to be built.(1)

Part of Kagero-class preceded by Asashio-class succeeded by Yugumo and Shimakaze-classes of which 23 were planned an 19 completed under the Circle Three Supplementary Naval Expansion Program, laid down by Uraga Dock Company on 30 August 1937, launched on 28 June 1938, completed on 20 December 1939, sunk by American dive bombers in the battle of Leyte Gulf 27 October 1944 and stricken on 10 December 1944.
