British cruiser HMS Phaeton and destroyer Thrasher collided according to the Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 21 August 1897

An item dated London, England 21 August reported the collision in the Channel during extreme worse weather between the cruiser HMS Phaeton (1) and the destroyer Thrasher.(2) Both ships were damaged, the Thrasher quite severe.

1. Ordered in 1880, laid down by Napier, Glasgow, Scotland on 14 June 1880, launched on 27 February 1883, commissioned on 20 April 1886, decommissioned as seagoing ship on 28 April 1903,out of service 1913, renamed training ship Indefatigable in 1913, renamed accommodation hulk Carrick II in 1941 and sold to be broken up in 1946 arriving at the scrapyard at Preston on 24 January 1947. Part of Leander protected cruisers preceded by Iris-class succeeded by Mersey-class.

2. Laid down by Laird, Son&Co., Birkenhead, England with yard number 608 on 30 May 1895, launched on 5 November 1895, commissioned in June 1897 and sold to be broken up on 4 November 1919. Part of Quail-class preceded by Zebra-class succeeded by Earnest-class.
