An item reported that a Japanese submarine of the I-8 class was sighted last night around 7:20 PWT off Ellwood which is 125 miles west of Santa Barbara, California, USA. It shelled the Bankline Oil Refinery with 25 rounds of 5” shells while hitting one or perhaps two wells. Damage was however small despite being undeterminded. The submarine stopped suddenly with shelling and went away.
