Laid down by Blohm&Voss, Hamburg, Germany with yard number 139 for the Dutch Holland America Line (HAL), Rotterdam, Netherlands on 4 May 1899, launched on 15 December 1899, completed on 5 May 1900, sold to the Swedish America Line in September 1915, sold to the Hvalfangerstakjeselskabet Atlas in November 1928, fitted out as whaling factory ship, captured by German auxiliary cruiser Pinguin in the Southern Ocean on 14 January 1941, arrived with prize crew at Bordeaux, France on 16 March, added to the Kriegsmarine and renamed Sonderburg, managed by the Erste Deutsche Wahlfang Gesellschaft in 1941,managed by the Trossschiffverband in1942, scuttled by Germans in the English Channel of Cherbourg, France in June 1944, partly blown up with explosives in August 1946, raised in January 1947 followed being broken up at Britain. Gross tonnage 12,246 tons, under deck 9,522 tons, net tonnage 7,090 tons and as dimensions 550.1 x 62.1 x 34.6 feet.
