British steam cargo ship Newton Pine visited Bulgaria according to a letter of the German naval attaché at Istanbul dated 2 March 1940

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 2 March No. 801 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 28 February the British steam cargo ship Newton Pine loaded with 5,760 ton wheat from Varna, Bulgaria for England. Her captain reported the office at Bilyükdere he was going to Gibraltar for orders which could not be correct. She was probably to load in Greece or at Izmir. Armed with a gun and probably an anti aircraft gun on the stern. Dark grey painted, funnel black and commando bridge, superstructures, masts and derricks brown.
