Portuguese gunboat attacked by lions according to the Dutch newspaper Tilburgsche Courant dated 16 January 1902

Tidings received from Lisbon reported that a Portuguese gunboat stationed off the Limpopo river [Mozambique] was attacked by lions! She anchored in the night near the riverbank when the guard was attacked by a complete family of lions. Officers fought fiercely with the lions which came on board and killed two of the beasts. The guard was mortally wounded. (1)
