USA approved sale freighters of Lykes Brothers Steamship Company to England according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Provinciale Groninger courant dated 6 November 1940

An item dated Washington 5 November reported that the American federal shipping authorities approved the sale of the next freighters owned by the shipping company Lykes (1) to England namely Quistoonck (5,144 tons), Jelse (4,994 tons), Liberty Bell (5,107 tons), West Skonk (5,430 tons) and the Oakman (6,081 tons).

1. Probably the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company also called the Lykes Lines. The website http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/lykes.htm supplied more details dealing with these ships. The Quistconck was built in 1918 and became in British service in 1941 the Empire Falcon, the Oakman was of 1920 renamed Empire Impala, the Liberty Bell of 1920 renamed Empire Mahseer, the Jelse was not named on this site but a the Jolee of 1920 was renamed Empire Flamingo and the West Skonk must be the West Ekonk of 1918 renamed Empire Wildebeeste.
