2 July. According to an extract of a private letter dated St. Michiel, Azores
19 June published in the newspaper l’Oracle arrived there a Portuguese goelette
of war coming from Terceira where she arrived a few days earlier coming via
Madera from Lisbon. She brought important orders namely to transport at once
all cash money available of the Customs service and to monster men regarded the
sighted Spanish fleet. Within 2-3 days were 500-600 men enlisted. The goelette
departed towards Terceira with the money and around 100 recruits. According to
the writer of the letter and other inhabitants of the Azores didn’t they have t
fear for a Spanish attack. Some believed it was a British fleet.
