American heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City (CL-25 since 1931 CA-25) 1924-1947


Of the Pensacola-class. Building ordered on 18 December 1924. Awarded on ( July 1926, supplementary contract dated 16 April 1927, laid down by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, USA on 9 June 1927, launched on 23 January 1929, sponsored by Miss Helen Budge, commissioned on 11 December 1929, reclassified as a heavy cruiser on 1 July 1931, decommissioned on 29 August 1946, stricken on 18 June 1948 and finally sunk while used as a target 130 miles of the Southern California coastline on 25 May 1947. Nicknamed Swayback Maru. Building costs 8.673.833 US dollars.

General technical specifications of the Pensacola-class cruisers. Displacement 9.200 tons/9.100 long tons (standard) and as dimensions 170 (between perpendiculars)-178,46 (over all) x 19,89 x 4,93 (mean)-6,7 (maximum) metres or 558-585.6 x 65.3 x 16.2-22 feet. The 4 Parsons reduction steam turbines and 12 White-Forster boilers supplied 107.000 ship via 4 screws allowing a speed of 32,7 knots or with a speed of 15 knots and  a bunker fuel oil capacity of 1.400 tons1.500 short tons a range of 10.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 863 men. The armour consisted of a 6,4-10,2cm/2.5-4” thick belt, a 2,5-4,4cm/1-1.75” thick deck with the barbettes, gun turrets and coning tower protected by respectively 1,9cm/-.75”, 1,9-6,4cm/0.75-2.5” and 3,2cm/1.25”. The original armament consisted of 2x2&2x2-20,3cm/8” /55 guns, 4-12,7cm/5”/25 anti aircraft guns, 2-3pd 4,7cm/1.9” saluting guns, 2x3-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes and 4 floatplanes for which she was fitted out with 2 catapults placed amidships. In 1942 were 4-2,79cm/1.1” /75 anti aircraft guns and 8x1-2cm/0.79” Oerlikon cannons added. In 1945 were the 4-2,79cm/1.1” guns replaced by 6xquad 4c,/1.6” Bofors guns and instead 8 was she now armed with 19x-2cm Oerlikon guns.
