French protected cruiser Protet 1896-1910


Laid down at the shipyard S.C. de ;a Gironde, Bordeaux, France in March 1896, launched on 6 July 1898, completed in February 1899 and finally stricken in January 1910.

Displacement 4.001 tons (normal) and as dimensions 98,1 (between perpendiculars)-101,0 (over all) x 13,6 x 6,43 (maximum) metres. The vertical triple expansion engines and 16 Belleville boilers supplied 9.500 hp allowing a maximum speed of 20 knots. With a speed of 10 knots and a coal bunker capacity of 650 tons was the range 6.000 nautical miles. The armour consisted of a 2,5-4,4cm thick deck with 6 cm thick slopes, guns shields of 5cm and the conning tower protected by 7cm. The armament consisted of 4x1-16,5cm/45 M1893, 10x1-10cm/45 <1893 guns, 10x1-4,cm/40 M1885 guns, 4x1-3,7cm/20 M1885 guns, 2-34cm torpedo tubes (afterwards beam) and she could carry 50 mines with her. The crew numbered 400 men. Sister ship was the Catinat.
