American whaler California visited Port Russell, New Zealand according to the New Zealand newspaper Daily Southern Cross dated 6 June 1874

An item reported the departure of the port of Russell, New Zealand on 6 May of the whaler California master Chase on a whaling cruise.

1. Whalemen's Shipping List dated 8 April 1873 reported as homeport New Bedford, USA, agents Charles R. Tucker&Co., leaving 7 August 1872. Ship registers of New Bedford vol III 1866-1939. Built at New Bedford in 1842, tonnage 366.58 tons, dimensions 114.4 x 28.1 x 18 feet, 2 decks, 3 masts, square stern, a billet head. Re-registered 7 August 1872. Master Josiah E. Chase.
