The Van Speijk was the eight and at the same time the last ship of the Karel-Doorman class, laid down on 1 October 1991, launched on 26 March 1994 and commissioned on 7 September 1995. With a displacement of 2,800 long tons/2,845 tons (standard)-3,320 long tons/3,373 tons (full load) are the dimensions 122 x 14,4 x 6,2 metres or 400'3"x 47'3"x 20'4". The 2 Rolls-Royse Spey 1A gas turbines supply 16,700 hp and the 2x Werkspoor diesel engines supplied 4,895 hp allowing a speed of 29 knots. Her crew numbered 154 men. The original armament consisted of 1-7,6cm gun, 1-2 cm gun, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Mark 46 torpedoes, a 16-cell Sea Sparrow missile vertical launch system and a goalkeeper and a Lynx helicopter
