Japanese cruiser Izumo visited Singapore according to the Dutch newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 11 December 1900

An item reported the arrival of the Japanese cruiser Idzumo at Singapore. She was described as a beautiful new cruiser, launched on 19 September 1899 at Elswick, England and bound for Japan. With a displacement of 9.750 tons were her dimensions 400 x 68 x 41 feet and was she armed with 4 heavy calibre guns, 14 large and 17 small quick firing guns and 4 torpedo tubes. With a horsepower of 14.00 hp and 2 screws was het speed almost 21 knots. Coal bunker capacity 1.400 ton. Crew numbered 483 men including 53 officers.(1)

The Izumo or Idzumo was laid down by Armstrong Whitworth, England on 14 May 1898, launched on 19 September 1899, commissioned on 25 September 1899, sunk in allied air attack on 24 July 1945 and broken up in 1947. Of the Izumo-class armored cruisers, preceded by Asama-class, succeeded by Yakumo class. Dimensions were 132.28 (over all) x 20.94 x 7.26 metres or 434.0 x 68.8 x 23.10 feet. Armament consisted of 2x2-20.3cm/8” guns, 14x1-15.2cm/6” guns, 12x1-7.6cm/3”/12 pd guns, 8x1-7.6cm/2.5pd/3” guns and 4x1-45.7cm/18” torpedo tubes.
