The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1906-1907 reported that the German cruiser SMS Leipzig (1) visited Sabang (2) on 9 November 1906, Belawan Deli on 13 November 1906, Tandjong Priok between 24-29 November 1906 and Surabaya, Dutch East Indies on 1 December 1906.

1. Of the Bremen-class light cruisers, preceded by the Gazelle-class and succeeded by the Königsberg-class, laid down by AG Weser, Bremen in 1904, launched on 21 March 1905, commissioned on 20 April 1905 and sunk by the British Royal Navy in the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914.
2. Sabang had an important coal bunkering station.
