An item reported that the USS Tutuila lying at Chungking, China was being transferred to the Chinese government. The J.I.C. commented that with this transfer the Yangze Patrol ended.

British minesweeping sloop HMS Buttercup 1915-1920

Built under the Emergency War Programme of the First World War. At the end of 1914 was the design completed and in July 1915 were 36 ships in 3 batches ordered for the British Royal Navy. British shipyards built an additional 8 vessels for the French Navy. Part of Arabis-class preceded by Azalea- and Acacia classes and preceded by Aubrietia-class. The Arabis-class was just like 4 other subclasses part of the so-called Flower-class, the later also known as Cabbage-class or the Herbaceous Borders. Launched by Barclay Curle and Company, Whiteinch, Scotland on 25 October 1915, sold on 5 February 1920, served as merchant salvage vessel Semper Paratus, of the Italian navy since 1933 and renamed Teseo and bombed at Trapani on 11 April 1943.

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1931-1932 reported that the Italian cruiser Trento (1) visited Tandjong Priok between 24-29 May 1932. The Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated Thursday 26 May 1932 reported her arrival at Tandjong Priok on Tuesday morning with daylight. Her commanding officer was vice admiral Cavagnari.(2) She came from Shanghai, China where she protected Italian interests and citizens during the conflict between China and Japan. After the exchange of gun salute with the coastal battery entered she the harbour assisted by the tugs Kraus and Paul of the Ned. Ind. Steenkolen Handelsmaatschappij and was berthed at buoys East Nos. 5-6. A large number of spectators stood on the quay. The Dutch naval oficer lieutenant 1st class W.H.C. Hoog was temporairly liason officer. The Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 23 May described her as a new Washington-cruiser of standard 10,000 tons, launched in 1927 and main armament of 8-20cm guns and going back home. A day after her arrival she could by visited between 15:00-18:00 o’clock, just like following days. On board was held a private reception and for her crew een football match with B.V.C.

1. Part of Trento-class succeeded by Zara-class based on a design made by general Filippo Bonfiglietti in 1923 and building ordered as response for the laying down of the first French Duquesne-class cruiser. Laid down by Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando, Livorno on 8 February 1925, launched on 4 October 1927, commissioned on 3 April 1929, sunk by a Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber and the British submarine HMS Umbra on 15 June 1942 and stricken on 18 October 1946.

The armament of the Dutch merchant ship El Libertador in the Second World War

According to the list and supplements 1-2 on 13 September 1945 BDZ No. 673sent by the office of armament the Royal Netherlands Navy located at 41 East 42nd Street, New York 17, USA. There were no complete records available, so there were several sources used to compile the list. Sometimes the kind of guns gave indirect information regarding the origin such as 4”/BL and 12 pounder guns were British mostly supplied in the United Kingdom, Canada or Curacao. The 4.7” guns were old Japanese guns placed on some vessels in the begin of the war at Singapore and some 4” guns in the same period at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. The trade in which the ship was used gave also an indication were the guns were supplied, for example involved in the Pacific trade means supplied at the West Coast.

Armed with 3-2cm guns and 1-3”cal 50 Ml 22-2 dual purpose gun supplied at Mobile, USA in March 1944.

No. 1-class patrol boat/ Type B ordered under the 1943-1944 Programme to be part of the coastal forces. Of the 280 ordered were just 56 laid down and even a less number finally completed when the Second World War ended. To serve as convoy escorts were the boats also fitted out with minesweeping gears. Based on a traditional wood built fishing boat. With a displacement of 238 tons and as dimensions 93.5 (between perpendiculars)-105. 3/4 (over all) x 20.2 x 7.75 feet. Geared diesel propulsion with 400bhp via one shaft and speed 9 knots. Crew numbered 26 men. Armament consisted of 2/4x1-2.5cm guns and 8-12 depth charges.

An Admiralty modified W-class destroyer ordered under the 14th War Programme . Of the 38 ships ordered were just 7 completed, the other 31 were cancelled. Preceded by S-and Parker-classes and succeeded by Thornycroft type destroyer leaders Ambuscade and Amazon. To be built by Yarrow & Company, Glasgow, Scotland, order cancelled on 12 April. 1919.

An item reported that according to Spanish newspapers the anonymous steamship sunk on 30 July by the German submarine SMS U 39 was the British steamship Ganges of 4,177 ton, loaded with around 7,000 ton coal bound for Italy. Her crew arrived at Gibraltar.

An item reported that the Austrian submarine SMS XVII torpedoed on 16 August in the South Adriatic an anonymous ‘secured’ passenger steamship of about 1,000 tons. The ship stopped but if she sunk was not observed.

Turkish merchant ship Burhaniye bound for France according to a letter of the German naval attaché at Istanbul dated 2 March 1940

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 2 March 1940 No. 801 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 28 February the Turkish merchant ship Burhaniye met 300 ton general cargo from here towards Izmir for more cargo and from there to Marseille, France.

Part of Unryu-class (project number G16) Ikoma-subclass preceded by Taiho succeeded by planned but not realized Project Number G18. Design resembles more the Hiryu than that of the Taiho. There were 16 planned namely under the Maru Kyu Programme ship No. 301 in 1941 and under the Kai-Maru 5 Programme Ships No. 5001-5015, at the end were 13 were cancelled. There were 2 subclasses namely Unryu (Nos. 302, Modified Unryu Class 5001-5006 and Ikoma (unofficial Modified Ship Number 302-class in fact a simplified Unryu model Nos. 5007-5015). Laid down by Kawasaki, Kobe, Japan on 5 July 1943, launched on 17 November 1944, 60% completed when building stopped on 9 November 1944, was to be completed by October 1945, and broken up between 4 July 1946-10 March 1947. 

French aviso Vitry le François visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies in 1932

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1931-1932 reported that the French aviso Vitry le François visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 14-16 March 1932(1). The Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 2 March reported that the submarine mother ship underway from France towards French Indochina would visit Sabang between 14-17 March. The De Sumatra Post dated 15 March called her a minelayer with a crew numbering 6 officers and 80 men. The De Indische courant dated Thursday 17 March reported that she arrived on the [Monday] 14th [at 09:30 o’clock] and would depart next Wednesday towards Saigon, French Indochina. The Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated Wednesday 16 March referred to press agency Aneta which reported from Medan that her crew laid a wreath for the French sailors buried during the First World War at Sabang.(2) Later telegraphed Aneta that she was departed that day [at 6:30 o’clock] towards Saigon with a planned visit underway at Singapore.

1. Arras-class aviso preceded by Marne-class succeeded by Ailette-class. Laid down by Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire (ACL), Saint-Nazaire, France in 1918, launched in March 1920, stricken on 22 October 1935 and sold to be broken up in 1935.

2. At Sabang were ensign Jacques Carissan and sailor Hamon Joseph Clairon buried after they died in the local hospital. Both men were wounded in the Battle of Penang of 28 October 1914 when the German light cruiser SMS Emden sunk the French destroyer Mousquet. The men were dropped by the same Emden at Sabang.

Part of Paulding-class (DD 22-42) preceded by Smith-class succeeded by Cassin-class. Some times DD 24-28, 30-31, 33 and 36 are considered as the Roe-class and DD 32,35 and 38-42 as Monaghan-class. Silhouettes differs while the DD 24-27, 30-32, 34, 36-37 and 40 possessed 3 instead of 4 funnels, with the middle funnel being larger with two boiler uptakes trunked together. The edition Jane’s Fighting Ships of World War I called the class instead of Paulding-class the Drayton-class which was unofficially also known as the Flivver Type. Laid down by Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts, USA on 5 March 1910, launched on 3 November 1910, commissioned on 22 July 1911, decommissioned on 9 December 1919, designation DD-34 since 17 July 1920, reassigned DD-416 and name less on 1 July 1933, stricken on 20 March 1935 and sold to broken up on 23 April 1935.

An item reported that the French battleship Dunkerque, damaged by the British Royal Navy at Mers-el-Kébir, French Algeria on 3 July 1940 arrived under her own power at the main French naval base at Toulon, Vichy-France. The J.I.C. commented that her departure from Mers-el-Kébir, French Algeria was mentioned in Summary No. 72.(1)

Part of Kawakaze-class consisting of the Kawkaze and Tanikaze preceded by Enoki-class succeeded by Momi-class. Built under the 8-4 Fleet Program Fiscal Year 1915 and able to escort the battleship Nagato and both Tenryu-class cruisers. Originally intended to be a follow-on version of the Isokaze-class design but nevertheless modified and afar more powerful. Laid down by Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, launched on on 10 October 1917, completed on 11 November 1918, decommissioned on 1 April 1934 and broken up.
